Please note that an application fee only extends an initial license to the next renewal date. Initial licenses do vary in duration. It is the responsibility of all licensees to renew their license before expiration. Failure to renew shall result in automatic forfeiture or suspension of the license by statute. Licenses which have forfeited are not automatically entitled to renew.

Can multiple renewal license fees be combined into one check using the online renewal system?

For a medical group, this process is similar to using one check for multiple invoices or paying a credit card bill. Here is the procedure:

  1. The licensee or authorized agent will log in and compelte the online renewal application. At the end the application there will be different payment options available, please select "Pay by Check". A payment voucher will then be generated.
  2. A copy of each of the payment voucher page must accompany the check so the correct renewal applications are credited.

 

Is late renewal really such a big deal?

If you do not renew your license before March 1, it will automatically forfeit by statute. Because the license is then no longer active, you may not practice medicine in South Dakota because it is a crime. The Board will have grounds for taking disciplinary action if you are practice without a license. Other entities or parties such as insurance carriers, etc. might also take issue with this situation.

It is the day after March 1 or later. Did I miss the deadline for my renewal?

Yes, renewal applications must arrive in the SDBMOE office to be reviewed and approved prior to forfeiture as indicated in your practice act.

Where will you send my renewed licenses, certificate, or registration?

It will be sent to the mailing address that you have chosen for all board correspondence on your renewal application.

How do I reinstate and renew my license, certificate, or registration?

Should you want to reinstate and renew a license, certificate, or registration forfeited due to non-renewal, first, send a statement of why the license, certificate, or registration was not renewed. You are welcome to email this statement to our general email at sdbmoe@state.sd.us .  You will be informed in writing as to your eligibility and if you are eligible, instructions will be sent to you. Reinstatement and renewal is an application process which may involve additional costs and time.

Please be aware if you are eligible to reinstate and renew, a new number will be issued.

What if my renewed license, certificate, or registration doesn't arrive?

The mailing address that you have chosen on the renewal application is used and every reasonable effort is made to ensure that your license, certificate, or registration arrives by first class mail. The Board is not responsible for mishaps that occur while mail is in the care of the US Postal Service. If your renewed license, certificate, or registration is returned by the US Postal Service, the card will be re-mailed, provided a different address is available. The Board does not keep copies of your license, certificate, or registration. There is a $10 administrative charge for issuing a duplicate license, certificate or registration.

Why are the reinstatement and renewal fees so high and why is there not an inactive or retired status?

By statute, the Board expenses must not exceed revenues. In this respect, the Board is considered a "fee for service" operation. The fees charged are a source of revenue to offset the expense of administration, constant updating, and regulation of your license, certificate or registration. There are many hours involved in processing applications and maintaining current files. It costs the Board as much to maintain a licensee file with Inactive status as it does to maintain a licensee file with Active status.  The fees from applicants applying for licensure, fees from registration renewal, and fees for other services are the basis for the Board's operating budget. We are not given money from any state tax source, or from the State of South Dakota’s General Fund. We do not have a no-fee renewal status, because processing each renewal consumes agency resources.

I do not remember my password/login information for the online renewal, how can I get that sent to me?

If you cannot remember your password, you may use the "Forgot Passowrd" feature on the online renewal website.  To request your login information, send an email to sdbmoe@state.sd.us with your name and profession; your username will then be emailed to you.

What are the payment options for the online renewal system?

There are four payment options:

  • Pay By Credit Card - You may pay online using a credit/debit card.  We accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.
  • Pay By Credit Card - If you choose to not pay online, please print the Receipt/Payment Voucher and fax or mail in with your credit card information.
  • Pay By Check - If using this option, please print the Receipt/Payment Voucher and return with your payment.
  • Employer/Third Party is paying fee - If using this option, please print the Receipt/Payment Voucher and have the employer return with your payment.
