Interstate Medical License Compact

Update to message below. South Dakota is planning to update its authority to perform the FBI background investigations through the South Dakota Legislature.

As of April 21, 2017, seven of the eighteen compact states are able to be a State of Principle Licensure (SPL) through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC). The remaining eleven states, including South Dakota, are working to clarify/verify that their state medical boards are authorized to conduct FBI background investigations in order to be an SPL.

There are discussions between the FBI and the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission (IMLCC) as to the appropriate method of conducting the criminal background check as required for licensure by the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC). As soon as those discussions are completed, South Dakota will take the necessary actions to allow accessing of the FBI Database in order to be a state of principle licensure (SPL) or a member state able to accept letters of qualification (LOQ).

The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact offers a new, voluntary expedited pathway to licensure for qualified physicians who wish to practice in multiple states.

Information, eligibility requirements, and application information can be found at the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact website: www.imlcc.org
